RICHARDSON, Texas, January 4, 2011 – Kevin Martin, former Chairman of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and leading expert in telecommunications and technology policy, has joined the board of directors at AirWalk Communications, the leader in small cell base stations.

AirWalk today announced the appointment of Mr. Martin to the position, noting that his presence on the board is part of a new expansion stage by the company. AirWalk is known for its technology leadership in compact macrocell, picocell, and femtocell networks.

Martin served as Chairman for the FCC from March 2005 to January 2009, where he created a regulatory environment that led to exponential growth in technological innovation, and wireless infrastructure and coverage for Americans.  While with the FCC, he conducted the two most successful auctions of spectrum, dramatically increased broadband investment and competition by removing prohibitive legacy regulations, and led the FCC initiative of preparing consumers for the nationwide transition from analog to digital broadcasting.

“We are thrilled to welcome Kevin to the board of directors. He is a visionary with a proven track-record for identifying the opportunities that will improve wireless service and promote growth for the industry,” said Serge Pequeux, president and CEO of AirWalk Communications. “Kevin will add a unique perspective to our discussions regarding market dynamics and his insight will help us maximize the reach of our products.”

“I am very excited to work closely with AirWalk to help identify new opportunities. As the surge in wireless data usage continues, AirWalk provides an effective and economical solution to bring coverage and capacity to the operator.” said Mr. Martin. “AirWalk’s unique approach to integrating IP-based Radio Access Networks is important to the industry because it resolves many of the challenges operators face in supporting user needs.”

Prior to joining the FCC, Martin served as a Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, as a staff member of the National Economic Council, as the official U.S. government representative to the G-8’s Digital Opportunity Task Force, as the Deputy General Counsel on the 2000 Bush for President Campaign and as counsel to a Commissioner at the FCC.  Before serving in government, Martin worked for several years in private practice at the Washington, DC law firm of Wiley, Rein & Fielding.
